EGNOS services
The EGNOS services have been defined to match the categorisation of the Galileo services. ESSP, through its operations, is providing a free of charge EGNOS Open Service and will provide, once the system is qualified in 2007, Safety of Life Services at a fee as liability issues linked to the performance levels (e.g. Integrity of the signal) that each customer requires. These contractual issues will feature in Service Level Agreements.
Open Service
This Open Service consists of signals for timing and positioning, freely accessible from EGNOS satellites without any charge. This service is accessible to any user equipped with a Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) compatible receiver within the EGNOS Open Service area. No guarantees are associated to this service.
Safety of Life service
As from the qualification of the EGNOS system, after the Initial Operations Phase, the signal will be used for Safety of Life services in most transport applications. The Safety of Life Service (SoL) is accessible to any user equipped with a Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) compatible certified receiver within the EGNOS Safety of Life Service area. This service is to be broadcast after the completion of the qualification activities of the EGNOS system, following the successful declaration of the EGNOS Operations Qualification Review. The Safety of Life service, accessible through the EGNOS geostationary satellites, can be used in most safety critical applications in the transport markets. For example, the Safety of Life service will be available for Commercial Aviation applications such as for Non Precision Approaches with Vertical Guidance in Europe. The specific application enablers have to be developed to utilize the Safety of Life service, such as compatible certified receivers, flight procedures, etc.
