An EGNOS based trial for Railways Satellite Navigation applications in Gauteng South Africa, on November 24 2005

INTEGRAIL (GNSS-based Rail Navigation User Equipment) is a new prototype telematics system by which GPS signals plus the EGNOS wide area correction and integrity signals are made available for day-to-day rail traffic operations. This common effort enabled to develop a system that uses GPS and EGNOS satellite navigation data for autonomous and reliable determination of train position, velocity and heading under all environmental conditions and for profitable support of railway traffic management, in particular on low-density rail tracks. The successful demonstration has included live operations involving a specially equipped train vehicle with onboard performance monitoring and control of the INTEGRAIL mobile unit. The selected  train scenario has showed the benefits of GNSS based navigation for railway traffic management and signaling such as autonomous position/velocity determination, status, performance and integrity monitoring, remote control and command. Further to the successful trial, a well attended debriefing session was held in a pleasant atmosphere at the Crown Miles Golf Course in Gauteng (South-Africa).
